In early July, Seattle-based MOD Pizza opened its first location in Maryland. Located in Silver Spring, just north of Washington, D.C., the quick casual restaurant opened in a 2330 square foot unit at Ellsworth Place, formerly the City Place Mall. MOD Pizza features individual artisan-style pizzas made on demand, using fresh-pressed dough and signature sauces. Customers can create their own pizzas and salads, using any combination of over 30 featured toppings, or they can choose from a menu of MOD classics. The pizzas are hand-cooked in an 800 degree oven in less than three minutes and salads are hand-tossed in front of the customer. MOD also serves local craft beers, wine, handspun milkshakes along with house-made lemonades and iced teas. MOD currently operates about 60 locations in Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania and, in addition to Maryland, will be opening in Idaho, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina by the end of 2015. The franchise chain is on track to be operating 100 units by the end of the year. “Our first store in the Washington, D.C. market is an exciting milestone for MOD as we continue to build our presence in great communities such as Silver Spring,” said Scott Svenson, co-founder and CEO. “We have a team of amazing individuals who are excited to share our MOD culture and to make a difference in their community.” Expansion is planned for several East Coast markets including another Maryland location, in Columbia, as well as a unit in Raleigh, North Carolina later in July and in Charleston, South Carolina in September.
