In mid-October, Spanish quick casual restaurant chain, 100 Montaditos has opened a new location in the former Green Papaya location on Elm St., west of Woodmont Ave., in Bethesda, Maryland. With its signature product, the Montadito, a traditional Spanish baked-to-order tapas-sized roll filled with the various ingredients making it a way of tasting different recipes, the 13-year old chain entered the U.S. market in early 2011 with a restaurant in Midtown Miami. There are now about ten of the 100 Montaditos restaurants in Florida and plans call for an entry into the New York and Iowa markets later in the year along with two others in the Washington DC area that are opening next year. Inspired by early 19th century Spanish taverns known for a combination of comfort and quick, personalized service, the design features hardwood or tile floors, granite countertops and tables, mood lighting and authentic images from the Spanish city of Cádiz. In addition to the wide array of Montaditos, diners can choose from a selection of salads, traditional Spanish wines and beers and authentic beverages such as sangria and calimocho, a blend of red wine and cola. The chain now operates about 300 franchised restaurants in Colombia, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Italy and the United States. The chain also enters Chile later this year.
