In 2002, Jeni Britton Bauer opened Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in Columbus, Ohio's North Market. Today, the company makes every ice cream, sorbet, and frozen yogurt from the ground up with grass-grazed Ohio cream, local produce, and carefully sourced ingredients including rare, fair-trade vanilla and bean-to-bar chocolate. In addition to being sold in many supermarkets, specialty stores and restaurants, the company also operates a chain of scoop shops.  Currently there are about 16 shops in Ohio, Tennessee, Illinois and Georgia.  In 2014, the chain will also open its first location in South Carolina.  The location is a street front unit estimated to be about 1500 square feet on King St., near Morris St. in Charleston.  Limited information is available though a spokesman for the company noted that the look and menu will be in-line with its other scoop shops and at this time, there are no other openings planned for 2014.  Ms. Britton Bauer has been making ice cream professionally for nearly two decades and is the author of The New York Times best-selling Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home.
