Papa John’s Expects to Continue Momentum in 2014

Based in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, the 30-year old Papa John's Pizza chain of take-out and delivery restaurants presently operates over 4160 restaurants in all 50 states and in 34 countries. Over 3250 of these are both company-owned and franchised in North America. As of the beginning of 2014, there were about 1200 restaurants in the company’s development pipeline of which about 200 are slated for the North American market with the remainder being international. The majority of these are scheduled to open over the next six years.  In late February, the company reported that for its fourth quarter that ended in late December 2013, revenues were $387.9-million, a 5.6 percent increase over the fourth quarter 2012. System-wide comparable store sales were up by nine percent for the chain in North America and up by seven percent in international restaurants.  For its full year 2013, Papa John’s Pizza reported revenues of $1.4-billion.  This is a 7.2 percent increase over the $1.3-billion recorded in 2012.  For the full year, system-wide comparable store sales in North America increased by four percent and at the international stores, comparable store sales were up by 7.5 percent. In 2014, the company reports that it expects to continue its momentum of solid growth across all aspects of the Papa John's business. Both the company and its franchisees plan to implement a new, proprietary POS system in substantially all domestic system restaurants in 2014, which is expected to add efficiencies to the operations. During the coming year, North America system-wide comparable sales are expected to increase two to 4.5 percent. International comparable sales are expected to increase five to seven percent, on a constant dollar basis, in 2014. Worldwide net unit growth in 2014 is expected to range between 220 and 250 units, with approximately 70 percent of the net unit growth in International markets and total consolidated revenues are expected to increase five to seven percent in 2014, due to projected North America and international net unit and comparable sales growth. The Papa John’s quick serve restaurants are generally in the 1200 to 1400 square foot range in high traffic plazas with signage and convenient access.
